It was a wonderful time deciding what to call the first chapter, but also a struggle. How do you capture the real nature of an event so terrifying with just a couple words?
Users arrive at their Boston precinct, get their bearings, and then are dispatched across town investigate a ritualistic crime where everything they have known gets turned upside down. There's blood, fear, and something very ancient to face which catapults them on a journey of discovery in future chapters.
We're excited to announce The Exorcist: Legion Chapter 1's title: "First Rites".
Journal Entry of Professor Sarren, Demonologist: #1
"What an excellent day for an exorcism."
Pazuzu, known to ancient Assyrians that followed the Mesopotamian religion as the king of the demons of the wind, brought both storms and drought. In those ancient times, he represented the southwestern wind and was worshiped as a demigod for it. He's generally considered to be evil and malicious, but he frightens away other evil spirits, which inadvertently protects his followers from plagues and misfortune. In some mythologies, he is thought to bring famine and locusts as well.
Pazuzu is often (possibly wrongly?) depicted as a humanoid figure with different animal parts. Some sort of bestial head, talons on both hands like a bird, two wings, and sometimes a full scorpion tail. But, with all mythologies, these can be considered caricature to what the demon may look like, if he ever existed.
Pazuzu is thought, by many modern scholars to be much more sinister than his followers believed. He picks away at a belief that a person holds dear though corruption, hate, and fear. There is no known weakness to his fury. Rumors of a child becoming possessed by a demon and the need for an exorcism have sprung up years back and the word "Pazuzu" has been thrown around from eyewitness accounts, but nothing is certain.
Additionally, there has been a murder of a priest down at the old Church, which could be linked to this demon. I have a feeling this is only the first chapter of a very long book. I need to look into this more...
What is your preferred locomotion type?
We've designed each chapter of The Exorcist: Legion VR with a variety of locomotion options in mind. Do you love teleport/blink or do you prefer to freely roam through environments? How about both simultaneously? We have all three covered with additional choices to further fine tune movement. These movement schemes seamlessly integrated into the Vive Wands, Oculus Touch devices and PSVR controllers (both Move and gamepad), enabling you to switch to your preferred locomotion option on the fly.
Faith alone won't save you! Throughout each chapter you will have the opportunity to uncover ancient spiritual relics that are of special significance. We won't say how, or where, but if you take the time to explore you will be rewarded for your efforts.
We have something special today for Friday the 13th.
In Chapter 1 you'll encounter Father Bell, a priest who isn't interested in self gain, but only the open-minded search for truth. This search has led him to look into things that others would dismiss as archaic nonsense. Many in the Church see him as a lunatic and out of touch with modern Catholicism.
An excerpt from his audio diary is here.
Excerpt: "The Catholic Church downplayed the reality of Satan and demonic forces after the liberalising Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. However, the conservative Pope John Paul II was clear about his belief in the occult and Pope Francis has also reminded Catholics that "Satan is real"."
In ancient Mesopotamian religion he was the king of the demons of the wind, brother of Humbaba and son of the god Hanbi. He also represented the southwestern wind & the bearer of storms and drought.
You'll be meeting one of these entities very soon on #htcvive #oculus #psvr #virtualreality
Wolf & Wood Interactive is an established indie team founded in the UK in 2015 by Ryan Bousfield. Their first release was A Chair in a Room for Oculus DK1 & Cardboard. Wolf followed up with a full-length narrative experience titled A Chair in a Room: Greenwater which released on Steam and was subsequently named by UploadVR as the “Best Horror Game” of 2016 as well winning Viveport's "Community Choice Award" for 2017. Their latest release was The Harbinger Trial earlier this year for GearVR.
Throughout the development process we've had a lot of discussions about what makes "good VR" and what constitutes effective horror (and how we can break the mold). We look closely at how cinematic and gaming experiences intersect. Titles we frequently reference are Soma, Firewatch, Bioshock, and Cloudhead Games's excellent work. Even the Myst series. All of these experiences convey a sense of place, tone and pose questions regarding the role of the participant in worlds they are navigating. The bar is high for The Exorcist: Legion VR, but we hope to do this beloved franchise the justice it deserves and push the boundaries of what "good VR" can be.
Please follow us on Steam or Oculus to stay up to date on new screenshot releases and gameplay trailers. PSVR owners- have no fear! We've also been building from day one with you in mind .
